St. Augustine, FL (December 2, 2018) - The Florida Highway Patrol was called to a four-car pile-up in St. Augustine on Saturday, December 1st. The wreck took place around 2:50 am in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95, north of County Road 210.
According to reports, 21-year-old Tyler Duane Lowery was approaching the overpass with Race Track Road when his vehicle struck a guardrail and a concrete pillar. The vehicle overturned and came to rest in the southbound lanes of I-95. Subsequently, both a 2017 Hyundai Accent and a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado came by and crashed into Lowry's vehicle. A third vehicle, a 2005 Dodge Ram, took evasive action to avoid the three vehicles and lost control before ending up in the woods.
Lowery died from his injuries at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. None of the other drivers were hurt in the accident. An investigation remains ongoing.
A reportable crash happens in Florida every 92 seconds. Many serious and catastrophic crashes across our state take place on highways. Higher speed limits, more congestion, and distracted drivers all contribute to higher rates of accidents and death on highways. Many people feel a false sense of security inside their vehicle and do not appreciate that a car crash when traveling at high speeds will almost certainly result in serious damage.
