St. Petersburg, FL (July 20, 2019) - A motor scooter driver sustained critical injuries in a crash with a vehicle. The crash took place in St. Petersburg on Friday, July 19th.
The St. Petersburg Police Department responded to the scene at 49th Street South around 5:55 a.m. According to police, 32-year-old Therese Ford was driving a Ford F-150 southbound on 49th Street when she attempted to make a left turn onto 8th Avenue South. As Ford turned, she collided with the scooter driven by 47-year-old Kimberly Shew. Shew was traveling northbound on 49th Street at the time of the collision.
Shew was seriously hurt and was rushed to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where she was listed in critical condition. Ford stayed at the crash scene and cooperated with police. There is no word on whether any charges are expected at this time.
Our thoughts are with Kimberly Shew and her family following this unfortunate incident in St. Petersburg. Moped, motorcycle, and motor scooter riders are at serious risk of death or catastrophic injury when they are involved in a Florida car accident. These types of vehicles are not likely to withstand the impact of a crash with a larger vehicle. Additionally, drivers of two-wheeled vehicles can be ejected or thrown from the vehicle, thus increasing the chances of serious injury.
