St. Petersburg, FL (June 24, 2019) - A motorcyclist was killed in a crash with a vehicle in St. Petersburg on Saturday, June 22nd. The crash happened in the 1100 block of 40th Avenue NE around 8:30 p.m.
Reports indicate that 26-year-old Michael Paul Lyon was riding his Kawasaki motorcycle westbound on 40th Avenue. At the same time, 71-year-old Margaret Sherry Capabianco was traveling eastbound on 40th. Capabianco attempted to make a left turn into a driveway but she turned directly into the path of Lyon's oncoming motorcycle. She struck the ride side of the bike. Lyon was rushed to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where he died as a result of his injuries.
Police are still investigating the crash. At this time, alcohol impairment does not appear to be a factor. No additional information is available.
We are saddened to hear of this tragic crash in Pasco County and our sympathies go out to the family of Michael Paul Lyon.
About 18% of all traffic crashes will involve motorcycles. Motorcycle riders as a group are among the most likely to suffer serious bodily injury or death in a crash. This is because a motorcycle offers far less protection from the impact of a crash. In the event of a collision, a motorcyclist may be thrown from the bike and can suffer serious head, neck, and spinal cord injuries. In this crash, it appears as though the driver's negligence in failing to yield caused the fatal collision.
