Tampa, FL (August 6, 2018) – One fatality stemmed from a serious Tampa boating accident that occurred Sunday afternoon and one person is still hospitalized with serious injuries. The accident happened off the shore of Davis Islands at a channel intersection.
A witness said that a 15-foot fiberglass canoe with a motor was traveling at a fast speed when it crashed into a nearby pole. The male passenger was ejected from the boat while the female passenger remained in the vessel. Following the crash, nobody held onto the tiller causing the boat to travel in circles. The girl hopped out of the boat instead of stopping the engine.
The woman was subsequently struck in the head and her hair was tangled in the propeller. When the boat stopped, a witness and another bystander were able to free her from the propeller and take her to safety on the rocks. She began breathing again and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
At the Tampa General Hospital, the male died from his injuries. The investigation into the matter continues.
In 2017 alone, there were 766 boating accidents. This was 52 more accidents than those that happened in 2016. Falls overboard have been one of the leading causes of fatalities. If you have lost a loved one or received serious injuries in a boating accident, we extend our sincere condolences to you.
