Tarpon Springs, FL (September 23, 2018) - A 27-year-old mother pushing a stroller was hit and killed by a vehicle in Tarpon Springs. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 22nd just after 6:00 am.
Officers with the Tarpon Springs Police Department received a call regarding the crash and responded to US Highway 19 near Spruce Street. Upon arrival, they located Tymira Latrel Leverson lying in the grass next to the roadway. Leverson was unresponsive when she was discovered with three children standing next to her.
Police believe that Leverson was pushing a two-year-old child in stroller off the right shoulder of the roadway when she was struck by a red Nissan pickup truck. The truck apparently attempted to move into a turn lane and struck Leverson from behind, causing the stroller to flip over and the child to fall out. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with officers.
The two-year-old child in the stroller was transported to Florida Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Leverson died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Tarpon Springs Police are still investigating and ask any witnesses to call the traffic investigation unit at 727-938-2849.
This is a very tragic crash and our thoughts are with the family of Tymira Leverson. On average, there are approximately two fatal pedestrian accidents reported in Florida each day. Many of these accidents occur late at night or early in the morning when visibility is lower. In all of these accidents, police must investigate to determine who was at fault.
We do not have enough details at this time to decide whether the truck driver will ultimately be responsible for the death of this young mother and we will have to await the outcome of the police investigation.
