Treasure Island, FL (June 28, 2018) – A Largo man jumped into action when a moving PSTA bus driver had a medical episode, which caused him to lose control of his vehicle. Though there was a crash, it could have been worse if the man wouldn’t have taken action and saved many lives.
A PSTA bus started to drive out of control when the bus driver lost consciousness due to a medical episode. Mike Hale, a man who was on the bus at the time, jumped into action to bring the bus to a halt. The driver was identified as Ervin Jones, who was slumped unconscious behind the wheel.
Mike Hale saw the bus jump a curb and quickly boarded the bus as a passenger to help. He pulled the man’s leg off of the accelerator but wasn’t able to fully pry it off so he grabbed ahold of the steering wheel.
The vehicle missed a large palm tree in its path. They struck a concrete pole, taking a good hit against the dashboard, but realizing that the accident could have been much worse. Hale then used his hand to push down on the brake so that they could avoid traffic.
Hale received sore ribs and a sprained thumb in the accident. Jones, a 17-year-veteran and bus worker, is now at Bayfront receiving treatment, but we do not have any updates on his condition.
