Venice, FL (October 31, 2018) - Four cyclists suffered serious injuries in a crash on Tuesday, October 30th. The crash happened on Center Road.
Police say that the bikers were three men and one woman, ages 55 through 67. They were traveling east on Center Road around 8:30 am when they were struck by a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. The crash occurred as the four riders were attempting to change lanes. Three of the bicyclists were airlifted to Sarasota Memorial Hospital and a fourth was transported by ambulance. All four are in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
Troopers are trying to determine at this time whether the crash could have been avoided and are looking specifically at whether the lane change was made in close proximity to the Cobalt. No further information is available at this time.
In 2012, there were a total of 726 bicycle fatalities in the country. Of those, 112 of the fatal accidents occurred in Florida. In addition, several more people were injured. While bicycle riding can be a fun outdoor activity, it is not without dangers. Bicyclists face a great risk of death or serious bodily injury when they are involved in traffic collisions. Our thoughts for a speedy recovery go out to the four cyclists who were critically hurt in this tragic crash.
