Volusia County, FL (September 2, 2018) - A woman ended up in the hospital on Saturday after being run over by a garbage cart. The 38 year old woman, whose identity has not been released, was lying on the beach Saturday morning just after 8:00 am. At the same time, a 20 year old man was operating a garbage cart on his regular route, near Seabreeze Boulevard. The cart operator apparently did not see the woman lying in the sand and ran over her with the cart.
The woman was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Authorities say that she is expected to recover. The garbage cart driver was charged with reckless driving for his role in the incident.
This is certainly an unusual accident. However, it is a reminder that an accident can occur at almost any place where people are gathered and that accidents are not simply limited to streets and highways. In this crash, it appears as though the garbage cart operator neglected his duty to maintain a proper lookout and did not operate the cart safely given the conditions existing at the time. The woman will have the right to file a claim for her injuries sustained as a result of the incident.
