Wauchula, FL (April 21, 2019) - An 82-year-old man from Winter Haven was hospitalized with serious injuries after he wrecked his motorcycle in a hit-and-run crash on US-17.
The Florida Highway Patrol reports that James Berry was traveling southbound near the Wauchula Supermarket when a white Dodge pickup truck crossed over his travel lane. Berry collided with the left side of the truck. According to witnesses, the truck driver got out and looked at Berry before returning to his truck and fleeing the scene.
Nearby witnesses assisted Berry until rescue workers could arrive. He was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with critical injuries. Police are still looking for the hit-and-run driver. Anyone with information is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 239-938-1800. The crash remains under investigation.
All drivers involved in injury accidents are required by law to remain at the scene of the crash; the motorist, in this case, failed to do so. Although it is not clear why this crash occurred, police will conduct a full investigation into the accident and the surrounding circumstances. When the driver is apprehended, they will likely be arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident.
