West Palm Beach, FL (December 4, 2018) - A trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol was seriously hurt when he was struck by a vehicle while standing along the side of the highway.
Mithil Patel was speaking with a witness on Monday, December 3rd when the incident occurred. A video from the scene shows an Audi A3 spinning out of control towards Patel just before he was struck. Patel reacted quickly enough to push the witness out of the way before the car crashed into him. Police believe that the Audi was hit from behind by another vehicle, causing it to lose control before coming towards Patel.
Patel went airborne following the crash and landed in the grass. He suffered serious injuries and was rushed to St. Mary's Medical Center. There is no further update on his condition at this time.
We send our deepest condolences and hope for a full recovery to the trooper injured in this crash. First responders and law enforcement place their lives on the line each day to keep us safe and we are extremely grateful for their service and sacrifice.
This crash underscores the fact that a car accident can happen anytime and anywhere. In some instances, a person may actually be in more danger when standing along the roadway than when they are in their vehicle. It remains to be seen who will be held responsible for this horrific accident.
