Winter Haven, FL (November 28, 2018) - Nine children suffered injuries in a school bus crash that took place in Winter Haven on Tuesday, November 27th. The crash occurred at Central Avenue East and 6th Street Northeast.
At the time of the accident, 20 children were being transported from the Learning & Literacy Academy. The bus was struck by a 2004 Mercedes when the Mercedes pulled in front of the bus and crashed into its side. An ambulance arrived on scene and transported 9 children to the hospital with injuries that were not considered serious or life-threatening. The children, ranging in ages from 8 to 15, were all expected to recover.
Police identified the Mercedes driver as 74-year-old Leo Sanchez. Sanchez was charged with careless driving for his role in the crash.
We are glad to hear that none of the children involved in this bus crash suffered severe injuries. Child safety is a top priority for anyone responsible for transporting children to and from school on a daily basis. Bus drivers and parents must be especially aware of their surroundings at all times and drive safely in order to avoid a tragedy from occurring. In this crash, it appears as though Leo Sanchez could be legally responsible for the injuries sustained.
