Winter Park, FL (October 13, 2018) - A SunRail train collided with a bicycle in an accident on Saturday, October 13, 2018. The accident occurred on Fairbanks Avenue between New York and Pennsylvania Avenues around 4 pm this afternoon. Both streets were closed for several hours and trains were delayed as law enforcement investigated the scene. They have since been reopened.
The crash involved a southbound train crossing at the Fairbanks train crossing, according to Steve Olson, the Florida Department of Transportation spokesman. An unidentified Maile bicyclist was injured in the crash though officers did not provide a reason for why he was on the tracks at the time.
The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital to receive care for his injuries. The 77 passengers and two crew members on the train were not harmed in the accident.
Though train accidents occur infrequently, bicycle accidents are common, especially in Florida where over 540 bicycle involved crashes occur every month. Without the protection of a vehicle, cyclists often bear the brunt of these injuries and can face expensive medical bills and a long recovery period. If you’ve been injured in a bicycle accident due to the negligence of another, you may have a right to seek compensation.
