Zephyrhills, FL (January 4, 2019) - A corrections officer in Zephyrhills was killed in a crash as she was reporting to work this week. The crash happened on Wednesday, January 2nd around 6:25 am.
Destiny Grooms was turning into the Zephyrhills Correctional Institution when she was rear-ended by another vehicle and propelled into oncoming traffic. She suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead. The other driver, 32-year-old Timothy Hurtt, sustained minor injuries.
Other corrections officers who worked at the facility say that the area is dangerous and that there are no turn lanes. Officer Amanda Schmidt said it was just a matter of time before a crash like this occurred.
There is no word at this time on whether Hurtt will face any charges for his role in the collision.
We wish to extend our condolences to Destiny Grooms' family during this difficult time. A fatal car accident is one of the most difficult things that a family will ever experience. Fatal crashes are reported about every three hours in our state. When a fatal crash occurs, police must carefully investigate to determine each driver's responsibility for the accident.
