A charter bus accident on I-95 left 17 injured when students and chaperones were headed back from a Florida trip. The accident happened when the bus left the roadway and entered the median of the road. It went through the cable barrier and crossed the road, going down an embankment. It stopped when it struck some trees in the woods. The bus nearly collided with a tractor-trailer as it headed across the roadway.
The tractor-trailer driver who was almost hit stopped at the scene and helped pry open the bus door so that the occupants could get out. Injured passengers were taken to the Colleton Medical Center.
Eleven students were treated for minor injuries at the scene and then taken to the hospital by ambulance. The bus driver and one other person received severe injuries. Though many have healed from their injuries or are in the process of doing so, the bus driver remains in the hospital for serious injuries.
