Alachua County, FL (December 16, 2018) - Several people were injured when their vehicle suffered a blown tire in Alachua on Saturday, December 15th. The incident occurred on Interstate 75 just after Noon.
A van was traveling in the southbound lanes of the highway, near mile marker 401 when the tire malfunction occurred, causing the driver to lose control and slam into a guardrail. The van then overturned and came to rest in the median of the highway.
The driver of the van, 44-year-old Janice Daniels and a passenger, 49-year-old Serena Johnson suffered serious injuries. 37-year-old Erica Dubois of Hawthorne was not wearing a seatbelt and was taken to UF Health Shands with critical injuries. Also hurt in the crash were 41-year-old Diane Drane, 55-year-old Sandra Bonds, and 47-year-old Patricia Brideau. Drane, Bonds, and Brideau were all seriously injured and Drane is believed to have life-threatening injuries. Two other passengers were uninjured.
Traffic in the southbound lanes came to a standstill while police investigated the wreck. No further information is available at this time.
A tire defect can cause a catastrophic event on the roadway. When traveling at high speeds, such as on an interstate, losing a tire can lead to serious injuries and death. As we see in this crash, the effects are devastating. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic crash in Alachua County.
When a vehicle defect occurs, a full and detailed investigation must take place into the cause of the defect. If the equipment itself was faulty then the manufacturer may have liability for producing a defective product. The tire could have been placed on the vehicle improperly or not according to specifications, which would then possibly lead to liability for negligent repair.
