Yesterday, a lawsuit was brought on behalf of the FIU bridge collapse by the family of Alexa Duran, who was 18 and the youngest victim of the accident. They filed a wrongful death claim against the Munilla Construction Management company as well as many other subcontractors involved in the case.
Alan Goldfarb is representing them, who is also representing the family of a student who was killed in August as he crossed the street that the bridge was supposed to protect from. Goldfarb, just like the family, believes that the companies acted recklessly and tried to hurry the project along without understanding the implications of doing so and that it could lead to disaster.
This is the fifth suit that has been filed since the tragedy struck. Duran had a 19-year-old passenger in her vehicle, Richard Humble, who escaped after the slab fell through her vehicle. He filed a lawsuit Thursday against many of the same companies.
The suits are not allowed to name FIU or the Florida Department of Transportation just yet because they have “sovereign immunity,” which gives them 180 days until anyone can file a claim. Many are waiting.
