Earlier this month, police were dispatched to River Street when they discovered a report of a motor vehicle rollover accident. A utility truck had front-end damage, with a second utility truck resting on its side. The man who was in the overturned truck said he was making a right hand turn onto Bank Road when he was struck from behind by the other vehicle. He had been coming from dinner at the 99 Restaurant with the rest of the utility crews.
When police talked to Alexander Cardenas, a Florida man and the driver of the truck that struck him, they found that he smelled of alcohol and appeared unsteady on his feet. He also had slurred speech and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy. According to the police, he claimed that he had only consumed one beer at the restaurant. However, when they looked inside his truck, they found an open bottle of Smirnoff vodka and Grey Goose vodka. He had also been charged with driving under the influence in the past.
Alexander Cardenas, 56, was charged with a second offense operating under the influence of liquor, negligent motor vehicle operation, operation without a license, and having an open container in the vehicle. He was arraigned on charges last week. The Assistant District Attorney in his case says that his Florida record is “brutal.” His bail was set at $5,000.
