Yesterday morning, a Sumter County ambulance crash sent patients to three different hospitals in various counties. The accident occurred when 22-year-old Michael Mahai drove his ambulance over a grass shoulder, activated emergency lights, and made a U-turn immediately in the path of a dump truck.
The front of the dump truck then hit the left side of the ambulance. A 39-year-old named Charles Dean and 20-year-old Nicholas Fatolitis were passengers in the ambulance at the time. 40-year-old Jorge Luis Rodriguez was the dump truck driver involved in the crash.
Mahai and Fatolitis were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, Dean was taken to Citrus Memorial Hospital, and Rodriguez was taken to South Lake Hospital. Mahai was cited for making an improper U-turn.
