Brevard County, FL (September 6, 2018) - A pedestrian died Wednesday in a Brevard County hit-and-run. Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol say that Michael Roman Catalano, 26, was traveling eastbound in a Kia Optima on State Road 50 around 11:00 pm. While traveling eastbound, Catalano struck a pedestrian walking in the roadway. The crash took place near Plantation Drive.
After impact, Catalano fled the scene but later returned and cooperated with authorities investigating the incident. Police have not identified the pedestrian at this time. Catalano did not suffer injuries in the crash. Charges are pending but have not been issued at this time.
Pedestrian incidents occur quite often in Florida. Approximately 500 people are killed each year in pedestrian crashes. Many pedestrians are involved in serious accidents late at night or early in the morning while walking in dark areas along rural roads.
A vehicle driver has a duty to maintain a safe lookout for all drivers and pedestrians at all times, day and night. When a crash occurs, the driver is also required to stay at the scene until law enforcement arrives. In this case, it is not clear if the driver was at fault for causing the initial collision although he did leave the scene. Police will conduct a full investigation surrounding the facts and circumstances of this crash. If the driver was at fault, the pedestrian's surviving family could attempt to bring a legal claim for wrongful death.
