Clearwater, FL (June 20, 2019) - The motorcyclist who was killed in a tragic crash on I-75 on Wednesday, June 19th has now been identified by authorities.
Police say that 45-year-old Jamie Vasean Johnson was riding his 2012 motorcycle northbound on I-75 when he was struck by a 1994 Lincon Town Car. The Lincoln, driven by 84-year-old Ellide S. Tamayo, collided with Johnson's motorcycle as it began traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes. Police have revelated that Tamayo became confused and drove southbound in the northbound lanes. Johnson was pronounced dead at the crash scene due to his injuries, while Tamayo was taken to Advent Health, where he was listed in serious condition.
The crash caused the northbound lanes to be shut down for several hours while police investigated. Charges are pending against Tamayo at this time.
We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Vasean Johnson during this difficult time.
A fatal accident is reported on Florida's streets and highways every three hours. The odds of being involved in a serious crash on a motorcycle are quite high. Motorcycles offer less protection from the force and impact of crashes when compared with cars and other traditional vehicles. In addition, a motorcyclist is likely to be thrown from their bike following a crash, which is also likely to cause serious injuries or even death.
