Clearwater, FL (August 12, 2018) – Three officers received injuries on the Courtney Campbell Causeway yesterday in two separate crashes .
The three victims were identified as Officers Paul Bosco, Michael Beaver, and Kevin Vigh. They were all taken to Mease Countryside Hospital with only minor injuries, and no other injuries were reported.
The initial call for help came around 3:04 a.m. iwhen a vehicle became disabled on the Causeway. One officer was on the scene waiting for a tow truck to arrive when a Ford Explorer struck from behind. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Joshua Mayer. Mayer had been looking at his phone when he lost control of his car. The officer’s emergency lights were on at the time.
Two other officers came to the scene of the crash. About 12 minutes after they arrived, a Ford Fusion driven by 24-year-old Billy Chatman III crashed into another cruiser. The impact was so forceful that it caused both police cars to slam into one another. The three officers were either directly involved in the crash or were struck by flying debris.
Chatman said that he had fallen asleep at the wheel, and he was also speeding at the time.
