Davenport, FL (December 24, 2018) - A 44-year-old woman from Davenport lost her life after being hit by a tow truck on Highway 17/92 near Dyson Road. The crash took place in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 22nd.
The victim, identified as Tammy Phipps, was walking along the roadway around 2:00 am when she was struck by a tow truck driven by Dennis Weatherford. Phipps suffered critical injuries and died at the crash scene. According to investigators, Phipps was driving earlier in the evening when she was pulled over by a police officer. The officer issued Phipps a citation for driving with a suspended license. After that, Phipps and a passenger, Josh Corbin, indicated to the officer that they would call an Uber to get home.
Instead of finding a ride, the two decided to walk, and Phipps was struck by Weatherford's truck. Weatherford remained at the scene following the accident, which remains under investigation. There is no word on any potential charges at this time.
Our condolences go out to the family of Tammy Phipps in this fatal pedestrian crash. Each day, approximately two pedestrians will lose their lives in crashes across our state. Many pedestrian crashes occur in areas that are poorly lit and at night or in the early morning hours where it can be difficult to see a pedestrian walking along the roadway. At this time, many unanswered questions regarding this crash remain and police will need to conduct a full investigation into the circumstances of the accident to determine if it was avoidable by one or more parties involved.
