In Tavares, a fender-bender became a dangerous situation when a Groveland driver struck a man who tried to keep another driver from speeding away from the accident scene.
The incident took place when 18-year-old Joseph Anthony Dale Crawford was driving behind Kalee Cromwell and another woman. Cromwell started to slow down and Crawford suddenly struck the back of her vehicle. Both drivers pulled over and the woman’s husband began walking over to argue with Crawford.
Crawford began to peel out of the parking lot and make a U-turn so that he could flee the scene. The witnesses started to yell at him, but the vehicle fishtailed and struck a witness, David Edward Richmond. Richmond received severe injuries and was taken to a trauma center. He suffered injuries to his leg, arms, and back. However, he is expected to make a full recovery.
Crawford claimed he feared for his life because of being confronted by bystanders. He was charged with hit-and-run, leaving the scene of an accident, and leaving the scene of an accident with serious bodily injury.
