Dunnellon, FL (February 10, 2020) - A 37-year-old man from Dunnellon died when his bicycle was struck by a vehicle on West Dunnellon Road. The crash took place around 7:20 a.m. on Sunday, February 9th.
Michael Todd Gilkderson was riding his bike westbound on West Dunnellon when he was hit by a Toyota truck. The impact of the crash forced Gilkerson off of his bicycle and onto a grassy shoulder on the side of the roadway. Rescue workers pronounced him dead at the scene.
The Toyota driver fled the scene before officials could arrive. Later, Florida Highway Patrol troopers were able to locate a suspected vehicle but no arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information should call the FHP at 813-558-1800.
Although not as prevalent as crashes involving cars and other vehicles, bicycle collisions can be just as dangerous and deadly. Last year, approximately 100 people were killed in Florida bicycle accidents and many more were injured. Drivers often fail to yield and bicyclists and may fail to carefully observe the roadway, causing a crash that can have life-altering consequences in a matter of seconds.
Our condolences are with the family of Micahel Todd Gilkerson during this difficult time.
