Estero, FL (February 10, 2020) - Multiple vehicles were involved in a wrong-way crash that took place in Estero on Sunday, February 9th. The crash was reported along I-75 in the northbound lanes of the roadway.
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, 25-year-old Mia Zambelli was driving a 2020 Ford Mustang southbound while in the northbound lanes. As she neared mile marker 126, the Mustang collided head-on with a 2014 Buick Enclave driven by Marcelin Demitry, 41. 21-year-old Kylee Kelly was a passenger in the Enclave. Four other vehicles were affected in a chain-reaction style crash after the initial collision.
Both Zambelli and Kelly were taken to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Demitry was transported with minor injuries. The FHP continues to investigate the cause of the crash and there are no further details available at this time.
Florida experiences a reportable car accident approximately every 92 seconds. Wrong-way crashes frequently cause serious and catastrophic injuries to innocent victims. Unfortunately, there is very little that can be done to avoid a crash with a wrong-way driver and victims often simply find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Alcohol is often a factor in wrong-way crashes and police will continue to investigate this collision to determine the cause.
We hope that the injured motorists are able to make a complete and speedy recovery.
