Hernando County, FL (January 1, 2019) - A 5-year-old boy was struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Hernando County. The crash happened around 4:00 pm on Monday, December 31.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a call in reference to the crash in the southbound lanes of Pomona Avenue near the intersection with Candia Street. Troopers say that the driver attempted to make an evasive maneuver to avoid hitting the boy but was unable to do so. After being struck, the boy was thrown from the bicycle and landed in the roadway. He was rushed to the trauma unit at All Children's Hospital with serious injuries. The driver remained on scene and cooperated with police following the crash. Neither the driver nor the child was identified.

Two men were killed in a single-vehicle crash that took place in Lake Wales on Tuesday. The accident happened on State Road 60 at approxiately 7:45 p.m. According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, 27-year-old Billy Burgess and 35-year-old Thomas Snipes, III were both killed in the crash. Burgess was identified as the driver of the vehicle. According to a report, Burgess was traveling westbound on State Road 60 when he approached a curve in the roadway. He failed to navigate te curve and the truck crossed over the median before overturning several times and coming to rest. Both Burgess and Snipes were ejefected from the truck and pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other individuals involved. Read more
