Hillsborough, FL (September 14, 2018) - An 8 year old child was hurt in a school bus crash on Friday morning, September 14th. The child was a passenger on the bus. Police say that the bus driver, 72 year old Phyllis Ann Mitchum, was traveling on Horton Road when she tried to enter the intersection at State Road 60.
As she turned, the school bus collided with an oncoming tractor trailer driven by 42 year old Benjamin Garcia Alfonso. The tractor trailer overturned in the crash. A third vehicle avoided the collision by swerving and going off the roadway. The injured student was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. There is no indication that anyone else was injured in the crash.
Mitchum was cited by police for failing to yield the right of way.
Child safety is the top priority for drivers in charge of transporting students to and from school each day. School bus drivers have a very important job and must always drive cautiously and safely, remaining aware of any potential hazards that could lead to an accident.
In this case, it looks as though the responsibility for the crash lies with Phyllis Ann Mitchum. A driver who fails to yield the right of way and causes a crash is negligent in the eyes of the law. When a driver's negligence causes injuries, those hurt in the crash can file a personal injury case seeking to recover damages, including pain and suffering and medical bills incurred due to the accident.
