Homosassa, FL (April 22, 2020) - A 49-year-old bicyclist was killed in a crash along US 19 on Tuesday. The crash occurred near Warber Court, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say that Arthur Nesbitt, III was riding a bicycle along a paved shoulder of US 19 when he was struck by the outside mirror of a 2017 Dodge Ram. The Ram driver was identified as 35-year-old Sarah Fogel. Nesbitt died at the crash scene and Fogel was not injured. Troopers are still investigating the crash and there is no word at this time on whether any charges are expected.
An investigation is ongoing.
Florida bicycle crashes, while not as common as other types of collisions, can still have the same catastrophic consequences. Last year in Florida, about 100 bicyclists were killed in crashes that occurred on our streets and highways. Bicycle riders are naturally more vulnerable to the impact of a serious crash because bicycles do not offer the same protection as traditional vehicles. Negligent and inattentive drivers will often contribute to injuries that are sustained by bicyclists.
Our condolences are with the friends and loved ones of Arthur Nesbitt, III.
