According to Indian River Shores Director of Public Safety Rich Rossell, a pickup truck attempted a U-Turn in the northbound lanes when the truck collided with the bicyclist. The bicyclist was riding in a bike lane when the crash occurred. An ambulance arrived on scene, however, the rider was eventually airlifted to a local trauma center with serious injuries. He was conscious at the time but it is not known if the injuries are life-threatening. The identity of the bicyclist has not been released.
There is no word on whether the pickup driver will face charges. No additional information is available.
In 2018, Florida experienced more than 6,500 bicycle accidents. Just over 100 of these crashes resulted in fatalities. Sadly, many bicycle crashes leave the rider seriously injured and facing a long road to recovery. This can include expensive medical treatment, including surgery, time missed from work, and a tremendous amount of pain and suffering. Distracted driving, aggressive driving, speeding, and failing to yield to bicyclists are all common causes of Florida bicycle crashes.
We hope that the person who was hurt in this crash on State Road A1A makes a complete and speedy recovery.
