Iverness, FL (June 30, 2018) – Two men died on Thursday morning in two motorcycle accidents that took place in separate cities. The Florida Highway Patrol investigated both.
In the first accident, 50-year-old Mitchell Lee Harkins was found around 7 a.m. near a motorcycle at the treeline of State Road 44. It took place around Iverness.
Harkins was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle on South Kensington Avenue when he went off the roadway and onto the shoulder. His vehicle overturned on him and killed him immediately. He was wearing a helmet at the time and was not under the influence of alcohol.
In the second accident, which took place around 10 a.m., Jesse Russell Simpson of Crystal River died when he rode his motorcycle into a fence. He was riding his Harley around Northeast Fourth Avenue at an intersection when he drove right on through and continued riding south. He went onto the property of a school and struck an iron fence. He was not wearing his helmet at the time and alcohol was a suspected factor.
Motorcycle riders are some of the most likely vehicle users to lose their lives in an accident. A large 14% of all motor vehicle deaths include motorcyclists. With so many people losing their lives on the roadways, precautions must be taken.
