Jacksonville, FL (November 13, 2018) - A 9 year old girl was among those who suffered injuries after a ride malfunctioned at the Jacksonville Fair. The incident took place on Saturday, November 10th.
Shawn Hall says that his 9 year old daughter was one of the riders on the Sky Flyer, a swing that is held by cables and spins in circles. The accident occurred when the swing malfunctioned, resulting in a collision with guard rails and other riders. The malfunction took place just after the ride began, but before the swings were lifted off the ground.
Hall says that his daughter suffered leg injuries as well as bruises and abrasions on her thigh. Another child, a 10 year old girl, sustained a broken rib and a collapsed lung in the incident.
Parents and those affected are considering legal action against the fair organizer. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is looking into the crash along with state inspectors.
Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy at the fair. Every day across our state people gather at events such as sports games, concerts, fairs, parks and other entertainment venues. Those who are in charge of public events are also responsible for ensuring the safety of patrons. When an incident such as this occurs, investigators must determine who was at fault. In this case, the fair organizer or anyone who was responsible for assembling this particular ride could be held responsible if they failed to meet certain safety standards.
