Jacksonville, FL - Bicyclist Dies in Sunday Hit-and-Run

Jacksonville, FL (November 5, 2018) - A fatal hit-and-run involving a bicyclist occurred in Jacksonville on Sunday, November 4th.  

The bicyclist, who has been identified only as a male, was riding on New Kings Road near Redpoll Avenue around 9:30 pm.  As the bicyclist traveled southbound, he was struck by a vehicle.  The vehicle then fled the scene before police could arrive.  The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was later pronounced dead.  Police have not offered any information on the type of vehicle that may have been involved in the incident.

Traffic homicide investigators are currently investigating.  The roadway was shut down for nearly three hours while officials worked at the scene.  No further information is currently available. 

Each year, more than 100 bicyclists are killed in accidents across our state.  The large majority of these accidents occur when bicyclists collide with vehicles or other automobiles.  Drivers are required to maintain an adequate level of attention and safe driving standards at all times to ensure that their negligent actions do not lead to injuries or death to others using the road, including bicyclists.

At this time, we do not know exactly how this crash occurred, and further police investigation should provide more answers.  In the meantime, our thoughts go out to the family of the deceased bicyclist.
