Jacksonville, FL (August 27, 2018) - A shooting at a high school football game left one person dead and two others injured on Friday night. The shooting happened at the end of a game between Raines High School and Lee High School.
Police have identified a single person as a suspect in the shooting. According to Michael Edwards, Duval Schools police director, approximately three fourths of the 4,000 game attendees had exited when the shooting took place. The victims have not been identified by police but is believed that they were teenagers.
Security at the game was tight, with approximately 50 personnel on hand, including 30 sworn law enforcement officers. Each person coming into the game was checked with a wand for weapons and other illegal items. It remains unclear how the shooting took place or whether the shooter had attended the game prior to the shooting.
Our thoughts go out to those affected by this tragedy.
Large scale events, including football games, public entertainment performances and other large public displays typically feature a large security presence. Security officers are responsible for ensuring that all in attendance remain safe and that violence does not occur at these events. Security personnel have an important and difficult job.
Sometimes, an insufficient level of security is provided leading to innocent people being hurt. In these cases, an injured person can consider a claim of negligent security. Under Florida law, entities which provide security at any type of event have an obligation to maintain the event or premises in a reasonably safe condition.
