A man from Fort Myers, 31-year-old Jonathan Powell, was killed when he hit a stopped dump truck head-on with his Volkswagen. The accident happened when Powell was driving his Jetta east on Daniels Parkway when he approached a red traffic light at Plantation Road. Powell failed to stop his vehicle and crashed into the dump truck in front of him.
When police investigated the scene, they found that there was no evidence that Powell applied his brakes before the crash. He was later pronounced dead at Gulf Coast Medical Center as he succumbed to his injuries. Both a trooper and a civilian who witnessed the accident worked to smash a window to take Powell out of his Jetta and perform CPR, attempting to save his life. The trooper was treated for cuts from smashing the window.
Luckily, the driver of the dump truck was not injured.
