Joshua Gerdes Tried to Steal Car With Children Inside, Injures One

A father’s vehicle was stolen while two children were stuck inside, prompting a father to jump into action. The victim drove his vehicle to an IHOP to help a friend who was involved in a crash while his 4 and 5-year-old were in the backseat. While he was helping, 32-year-old Joshua Gerdes rode up to the scene on a bicycle and jumped into the driver’s seat.
The victim watched Gerdes drive away with the two children in the back, so the father grabbed ahold of the door trying to stop Gerdes. He was then dragged for about 50 yards. Gerdes abandoned the vehicle in a wooded area and apologized to police, saying he had no idea there were children in the car.
The boys were not injured. The victim, however, sustained cuts to his knees. He did not require hospitalization. Gerdes was charged with carjacking, aggravated battery, and more.
