Lake County, FL (September 24, 2018) - A motorcyclist died after colliding with a vehicle in Lake County on Saturday, September 22nd. The Florida Highway Patrol was called to the crash scene at on US 27 about a car vs. motorcycle collision.
When they arrived, troopers began an investigation into the accident. The investigation revealed that a 2015 Chevrolet Sonic was stopped and attempted to make a right turn onto US 27. The turn was made directly into the path of a 2009 Suzuki Motorcycle driven by Cory Negron Lopez, age 30. Lopez was transported by EMS to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
No charges have been issued at this time. The motorcycle crash remains under investigation.
Motorcycles can be a dangerous mode of transportation. While motorcycles represent less than 1% of all registered motor vehicles, they account for approximately 20% of all vehicle-related fatalities. A motorcycle accident, on average, is likely to be far more serious and even deadly when compared with a traditional vehicle accident.
In this case, police will focus on whether the Sonic driver made the right turn safely or whether she was negligent in turning into the path of the oncoming motorcycle. The conclusion will be crucial because, if the driver was negligent, the family of Cory Lopez will have the right to bring a claim for his wrongful death.
