Lake County, FL (August 26, 2018) - A 57 year old motorcyclist was killed in a crash Saturday on U.S. 27. According to Florida Highway Patrol, Thomas Knight was riding south on 27 when he was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by 31 year old Jeffery Smith. Smith was attempting to make a right turn onto U.S. 27 from another street when the crash occurred.
Knight was thrown from his motorcycle following impact. Paramedics and emergency officials responded and initiated life-saving efforts. Ultimately, however, Knight succumbed to his injuries. Smith suffered minor injuries and was treated a Southlake Hospital.
There is no word at this time on whether Smith will be charged and the crash remains under investigation.
Being involved in a motorcycle accident can have severe and long-lasting consequences. Last year, there were over 5,000 deaths due to motorcycle crashes. Unfortunately, a motorcyclist often gets the worst end of the collision. Motorcycles of course do not offer the same protections as a traditional vehicle in the event of a crash.
This crash will require further investigation to determine responsibility. It will have to be determined whether Smith had the right of way, whether Knight was violating any traffic laws at the time of the crash and whether other factors, such as road conditions may have played a part in this tragic crash. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased at this time.
