Lake Worth, FL (June 23, 2018) – A man was killed by a train in a Lake Worth accident when he was driving around the track gates and the train suddenly rode upon him.
The accident took place early this morning when the man was illegally driving around the track gates. 24-year-old Sean Deruise Jr. was driving west on Washington Avenue from the Dixie Highway. He was around the scene of the train gates close to 1 a.m. in the morning. They were down and flashing at the time because a train was headed through.
The train came down the tracks and hit Deruise’s vehicle on the passenger side. It turned the vehicle around in a southwest direction, resting beside the train.
At this time, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is investigating and said that the train was not able to stop in time to prevent the accident. The train conductor luckily did not sustain injuries.
Train-related deaths occur in Florida every year. In fact, the Florida East Coast Railway and Brightline, two of the largest systems in the state, have seen 76 deaths in only 3 years. These accidents continue to happen for many reasons, caused by the negligence of both train operators and drivers.
