Lakeland, FL (December 22, 2018) - A crash on Interstate 4 in Lakeland left four people hurt on Friday, December 21st. The accident took place just after 10:00 pm, near mile marker 39 in the westbound lanes.
According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, 31-year-old Vicente Oyola was traveling west in an Acura MDX when he drove onto the median and collided with a cable barrier. His car continued traveling, now in the eastbound lanes of the highway. Oyola sideswiped a Lincoln Town Car and then collided head-on with a van. The force of the crash caused the van to collided with a semi-truck.
The driver of the van, age 36, and a 35-year-old passenger suffered serious injuries and was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital. A 1-year-old girl in the van suffered minor injuries and was also transported to Lakeland Regional. Neither the driver of the Lincoln nor the semi-truck was hurt. Oyola was seriously hurt and is at Lakeland Regional in critical condition.
Troopers believe that alcohol played a role in the crash and charge are currently pending against Oyola.
We are saddened to hear of this serious four-vehicle crash in Lakeland. This year, approximately 250,000 injury crashes will be reported across our state. Unfortunately, alcohol will play a role in many of the crashes, as it appears to have done in this one. Drivers who choose to drive while impaired place all others, including themselves, at great risk of death or serious bodily injury. Consuming alcohol and driving slows reaction times and hinders a driver's ability to appreciate the dangers of driving. As a result, impaired drivers often cause serious crashes at high speeds, resulting in losses to innocent motorists.
