Lakeland, FL (February 2, 2019) - A 53-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Friday, February 1st. Lakeland police report that Jimmie Purcell had just left a Harley Davidson dealership in the city around 6:30 pm when he was hit by a truck on Lakeland Hills Boulevard.
The truck, identified as a Ford F-150, was traveling southbound in the inside lane when it attempted to merge into an outside lane. While in the process of changing lanes, the truck collided with Purcell's motorcycle. Purcell was thrown from the bike as a result of the impact. Rescue workers rushed to the scene and performed lifesaving measures. Purcell was then transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. A passenger in the truck attempted to flee the scene following the crash but was later apprehended.
Authorities are still investigating the accident. No charges have been filed at this time.
Motorcycle deaths account for about 14% of all traffic-related fatalities in Florida. This is a shocking number considering that only about 3% of all registered motor vehicles are motorcycles. The risk of being involved in a serious or fatal motorcycle crash is unfortunately quite high. We wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Jimmie Purcell in the tragic Lakeland motorcycle crash.
