Marion County, FL (July 4, 2018) – A Marion County firefighter was struck by a Ford Focus while he was working at an accident scene. The accident happened on Tuesday afternoon when he and his crew were helping victims, one of which was a pregnant woman. He was aiding at the scene of a two-vehicle accident at the time.
The firefighter was identified as 10-year veteran Brendan Rooney. He was struck by a Ford Focus that was driving eastbound half a mile east of Northwest 77th Street.
One witness, identified as Michele Olney, said that she slowed down when she noticed the scene of the accident. However, a 28-year-old behind her, identified as Dominique Oliver, swerved around her and kept going. She struck the firetruck and Rooney at the scene.
Rooney was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries at Ocala Regional Hospital. Oliver was arrested and cited for the crash, as well as drug possession after police investigated.
It was determined that Rooney was walking to his truck to obtain equipment to use in the accident when he was struck. The two vehicles involved in the initial accident had collided due to one hydroplaning.
