Marion County, FL (March 14, 2021) - A Marion County woman was killed in a pedestrian crash on Sunday morning near Ocala. The accident took place on U.S. Highway 441 near the intersection with SE 45th Street.
The Ocala Fire Rescue and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene. According to a report the woman was walking in the area when she was hit by a car. The pedestrian, who has not been identified at this time, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained at the site of the crash and cooperated with the police. There were no other injuries reported.
An investigation into the collision is ongoing. No further information is available.
Last year about 700 people lost their lives in Florida pedestrian crashes. This number is alarmingly high and represents the continued problems that pedestrians face in crashes involved vehicles. When a pedestrian is involved in an accident, they have a good chance of being seriously hurt or killed. This is because pedestrians have no protection from the force of serious contact caused by a car accident. Police will continue to investigate this pedestrian crash in Marion County.

A teenager suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car in front of Merritt Island High School on Friday afternoon. The crash was reported just before 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Mustang Way and Courtenay Parkway. The Brevard County Fire Rescue responded to the accident scene. According to officials, the 16-year-old victim was walking in the area when they were hit by a vehicle. The teen suffered a head injury and received treatment at the scene before being airlifted to a local hospital as a trauma alert. There is no update on the teen's condition.
