Miami, FL (December 2, 2018) - A girl is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood. The crash happened around 6:45 pm on Friday, November 30th.
The City of Miami Police and Fire Rescue units were called to the scene at Northwest Second Avenue and 53rd Street in reference to the crash. The driver who struck the girl fled the scene prior to police arrival. Later, several civilians confronted the driver and law enforcement was called in for assistance. The girl was transported to Holtz Children's Hospital with injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.
The driver was arrested by police on charges related to the incident.
Hit-and-run crashes account for about 25% of all vehicle accidents reported in Florida. Drivers have a legal duty to remain at the scene of a crash. When injuries are involved, it is a felony to leave a crash scene and drivers will face substantial penalties including fines, loss of license and potential prison time.
When you have been hurt in a hit-and-run crash, it is normal to feel a sense of frustration and anger at the driver who chose to flee the scene rather than accept responsibility for the incident. In many cases, the driver will eventually be apprehended by police and brought to justice. In other cases, the driver may never be located.
