Miami, FL (August 31, 2018) - Two people died and multiple people suffered injuries following two separate accidents at one location in Miami. The accidents, which were reported early Friday morning, took place on I-95, near Northwest 62nd Street.
According to police, a group of motorcyclists were traveling on I-95 when one of the bikers was involved in a crash. The remaining group of motorcyclists along with passerby Good Samaritans stopped to assist the injured biker. While the group was in the roadway providing assistance, a white van came along and crashed into everyone on the scene in a mass casualty accident.
A police officer traveling through the area saw the scene and stopped to render aid. EMS and rescue workers were called in as well. In total, 11 people were injured in the accident. Two people are reported deceased. Seven others were transported to a hospital, with three in critical condition. There is no word on whether the van driver remained at the scene following the crash.
Officials expect the roadway to be shut down for several hours while the scene is cleared.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to anyone affected by this terrible tragedy.
Although it is still too early to speculate, it appears as though the van driver is negligent in causing this crash. In general, all drivers have a legal duty to exercise care and caution and to remain alert for others on the roadway. If the van driver breached this duty, then they would be held responsible for all resulting consequences.
Injury accidents happen approximately 250,000 times per year in Florida. This accident is very sad reminder that a crash can occur at the most unlikely and unfortunate of times.
