Micanopy, FL (November 12, 2018) - A man from Gainesville is dead after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle on US 441. The crash took place on Sunday, November 11th.
According to reports, 33 year old Calvin Anthony Smith was riding southbound on US 441, approaching the intersection with Southeast 185th Avenue. At the same time, 36 year old Lauren Anne Sams was traveling eastbound on Southeast 185th. Sams failed to yield the right-of-way at the intersection and collided with Smith's motorcycle.
Smith died at the scene of the crash. The crash is still under investigation. Police are considering possible charges but none have been filed at this time.
Approximately 14% of all traffic-related deaths involve motorcycles. This is an astounding number when considering that just 3% of all registered motor vehicles are motorcycles. Clearly, riding a motorcycle carries a great risk of death of serious bodily injury in the event of a crash.
Motorcycle riders should always exercise caution and ensure that they are complying with all rules of the road. However, accidents will inevitably occur, even if a motorcycle rider complies with all laws and safety precautions. This crash is an example of tragedy occurring due to the negligence of another driver.
