Over 10,000 pedestrians will be hurt annually in crashes involving vehicles. Three-fourths of all pedestrian accidents will involve injuries serious enough to require hospitalization and over 20% of traffic accident deaths are attributed to pedestrian fatalities.
It is clear that a pedestrian crash can have serious, long-term, and even irreversible consequences. It is important, therefore, for both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert for one another. Pedestrians should cross the street in crosswalks and marked areas and should wear reflective clothing when walking at night and in poorly-lit areas. Drivers must always be on the lookout for pedestrians and should exercise caution in areas where pedestrians are likely to be found.
