The Florida Highway Patrol was dispatched to the accident. Once on scene, troopers discovered an SUV driven by 32-year-old Carolina Canon ran off the road and hit a tree. Cannon's passenger, 35-year-old Jose Luis Jimenez, was critically hurt in the crash. He was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where he later died. Canon received minor injuries.
Troopers are still investigating the accident. At this time, it appears as though alcohol may be have played a role in the crash.
Fatal accidents happen every day in Florida. In fact, a fatal crash will be reported about once every three hours. Many fatal crashes are caused due to the effects of alcohol or drugs and driving under the influence. Drivers who are under the influence will greatly increase the risk of death or serious injury to themselves as well as to others, including passengers in their own vehicles. In this case, it appears as though alcohol played at least some role in the death of Jose Luis Jimenez. Our thoughts are with Jimenez's family during this difficult time.
