Silver Springs, FL (August 23, 2018) - A Jensen County Sheriff's Deputy was seriously injured while serving on duty Wednesday. The crash took place around 10:45 pm on County Road 314. At that time, Deputy Ryan Owens, 21, was traveling north when his car was struck by a 2006 Toyota Tundra. The Tundra was traveling south before it crossed over the center line and collided with Owens's vehicle. The Tundra driver is identified as 48 year old Jeffrey Lenway.
Owens attempted to avoid the collision by swerving and applying his brakes but was unable to maneuver in time to avoid the head-on impact. Paramedics rushed Owens to Ocala Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. He is currently listed in stable condition. Lenway also suffered serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
According to reports, charges are pending against Lenway. It is unclear at this time if alcohol played a role in this crash. No further details are available.
Our thoughts are with Deputy Owens and his family during this difficult time. The days and weeks following a serious car accident can be traumatic as the victim, along with friends and family members try to adjust to an unfamiliar situation. Lives can be put on hold indefinitely during the long recovery process from a serious accident.
It appears as though Jeffrey Lenway will be held responsible for this crash. If Lenway was in fact negligent in causing the accident, then he will be responsible for reimbursing Deputy Owens's medical bills, lost wages, as well as pain and suffering.
