St. Petersburg, FL (September 12, 2018) - A school bus and motorcycle collided on Tuesday, September 11th resulting in the death of the motorcyclist. According to initial reports, 21 year old Wanderley Rosales Echemen was riding his motorcycle when he came into the path of a school bus. The bus attempted to make a left turn in front of Echemen. There was not enough time to complete the turn, however, and Echemen slammed into the side of the bus.
Echemen suffered critical injuries from the collision and was pronounced dead at the accident scene. The bus, which was coming from Nina Harris School, was carrying several children at the time of the crash. No one on board was injured.
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. Troopers report that charges are pending.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family of Wanderley Echemen in this tragic crash. Motorcycle riders face great risk of death or serious injury. Approximately 25% of all vehicle-related fatalities occur in crashes involving motorcycles.
In this crash, the subsequent police investigation appears that it will lead to charges against the bus driver. Drivers who fail to yield to a motorcycle may face charges and also will have civil liability for any injuries resulting in the crash. The deceased motorcyclist's family will have the right to bring a wrongful death claim against the driver responsible for this tragic crash.
