St. Petersburg, FL (June 13, 2020) - A 59-year-old man died in a St. Petersburg pedestrian crash on Friday night. The accident happened around 11:00 p.m. on 54th Avenue near Haines Road.
Police say that an 18-year-old driver was traveling eastbound on 54th Avenue and struck the pedestrian as he was crossing the highway. Rescue workers rushed the unidentified pedestrian to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver has not been identified at this time. No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
Last year about 700 people lost their lives in Florida pedestrian crashes. This number is alarmingly high and represents the continued problems that pedestrians face in crashes involved vehicles. When a pedestrian is involved in an accident, they have a good chance of being seriously hurt or killed. This is because pedestrians have no protection from the force of serious contact caused by a car accident. Police will continue to investigate this crash in St. Petersburg.
Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased victim during this difficult time.
